With over 59 species of British butterflies and 2,500 moths you would not think they could be in any danger, but it is a sad fact that roughly two-thirds are declining and many are under threat of extinction. In fact it is believed that in the last 100 years we have lost nearly 70 different species so our set of the month for September may be your last chance to see some of the wonderful varieties of butterflies and moths found in the UK. The card fronts contain lovely colour illustrations of the creatures concerned and the informative backs tell us about their favourite habitat and food as well as describing them and their caterpillars. Included in the set are the Hummingbird Moth which is one of the few which fly during the day, the Painted Lady which is a beautiful summer visitor, the Common Blue, which as its name suggests is the commonest butterfly in the British Isles, the Cinnabar moth which likes open waste ground, the furry Puss Moth, the Orange Tip butterfly which first appears around the middle of May, the Fritillary whose caterpillar is black and spiny and the Death's Head Moth so named because it appears to have a 'skull-and-cross-bones' on its back.
